Sunshine Vizslas began its journey in 2016 with our first Vizsla, "Fanta," followed by "Crush" in 2021. The decision to breed was a natural progression for us, driven by our deep passion for the Vizsla breed.
We feel incredibly fortunate to have received mentorship from the highly respected Beverley Wanjon of Russet Leather Vizslas. Bev has been instrumental in mentoring our breeding program, emphasizing the importance of proving our dogs in competition, conducting extensive health testing, and selectively breeding for type, temperament, and overall health.
Before breeding, our dogs undergo comprehensive health testing, including OFA clearances for Hips, Thyroid, and Eyes, adhering to the CHIC recommended health screenings for Vizslas. Additional tests such as PennHip, Cardiac, and Elbow testing are often performed, supported by a multi-generational history of verifiable health clearances. Both the Sire and Dam of our puppies are always AKC Conformation Champions/Grand Champions, not merely boasting a "champion pedigree." They are registered with the AKC and DNA profiled.
At Sunshine our raised to the highest standards using Puppy Culture protocols. Our dogs are family & raised as loved family members indoors. Our pups are trained & graduate from the AKC Star Puppy Program & Canine Good Citizen Program. We also train our dogs for the AKC Tricks Dog Title Certifications.
At Sunshine we are proud members of the American Kennel Club. The AKC is the recognized and trusted expert in breed, health and training information for dogs. The AKC furthers the sport of purebred dogs, but also strives to promote and protect dogs in nationwide communities, local communities, through educational programs, training classes and health clinics, a rescue network, as well as responsible breeder locator service.
At Sunshine we are members of the South Coast Vizsla Club & Vizsla Club of America, both are non-profit organizations founded and devoted to furthering the pure-bred Vizsla. In the early 1950s, a group of dedicated Vizsla fanciers organized the Magyar Vizsla Club, later to be renamed the Vizsla Club of America. Since 1953, the club's newsletter, the Vizsla News, has helped inform and connect Vizsla lovers. In 1960, the Vizsla was the 115th breed to be formally recognized by the American Kennel Club.
Each year the VCA sponsors national events that include:
Nationwide, 35 regional Vizsla clubs host many field trials, shows, fun days, AKC hunt tests, and obedience, rally and agility trials. The Vizsla is noted for its versatility, and VCA actively promotes the versatile nature of the breed. Introduced in 1981, the VCA's Versatility Certificate program recognizes those Vizslas that have met specific standards in field, conformation and obedience.
